End of the Semester Reflections and Looking Ahead

I can hardly believe it, we’ve reached the end of the semester! Time truly does fly. As I pause to look back, I’m amazed at how much I’ve accomplished in just four months. It hasn’t been an easy ride, but I’ve pushed through, and now I’m ready to enjoy some well-deserved rest before diving into the next phase of my academic journey.

This semester has been a challenging yet rewarding experience. I feel grateful to have shared it with such a great group of classmates, and I’m looking forward to seeing many of you again in the spring term.

Next semester, I’ll be moving on to Part 2 of my MA Thesis, and I already have a few goals in mind for refining and expanding my work. In my end-of-semester self-reflection, I outlined a detailed plan for the winter break to ensure I stay on track:

  • Revisiting Current Chapters: I’ll refine their structure and content, integrating feedback from classmates/professors.
  • Targeted Research: Over the break, I’ll conduct additional research to fill in the gaps identified this semester.
  • Outlining New Chapters: I plan to map out the remaining chapters to ensure a clear direction for the Spring 2025 semester.
  • Incorporating Personal Narratives: I aim to revisit my sister’s medical records and our family’s documentation/materials of her recovery. These detailed accounts will enrich the narrative and deepen the emotional impact of my thesis.

To bring this thesis to life, my focus will be on blending personal and academic elements seamlessly. It’s crucial to maintain a strong emotional voice while tying together the threads of my sister’s journey, my research, and the broader implications of her story.

The Spring 2025 semester will be pivotal. My goal is to create a thesis that not only meets academic standards but also resonates deeply on a human level. It’s a daunting challenge, but one I’m definitely passionate about. As winter break approaches, I hope it brings everyone a balance of rest and productivity. Let’s make the most of this time to recharge and return renewed for the spring semester.

Unpacking the Past: Part 1 Interview

​​In this blog I’d like to share my reflections on my interview with my sister. As you may remember from my last post, this interview was a key step in gathering the material I need for this memoir. I’m considering this part 1 of the interview process since I kept it brief and limited our conversation to just an hour to avoid overwhelming either one of us. To be honest, it wasn’t easy. Reliving some of the memories of her accident and the aftermath was incredibly tough, not just for her, but for me as well. It was important to me to approach this gradually, as the subject matter is heavy and emotional.

But despite the heaviness of the conversation, I believe we made it through with a sense of strength and purpose. It was emotional at times, and there were moments when it felt like we might not be able to continue, but we pushed through. There were tears, of course, but there was also a sense of healing in talking openly about what happened.

After reviewing the notes from the interview, I’m feeling optimistic. I believe I have something to work with. The details my sister shared with me will be valuable as I continue to piece together her story and the impact of the accident on both of our lives. It’s going to take time and careful thought but I feel like I’m on the right track.

I’m also reminded that writing about such personal experiences isn’t just about telling a story, it’s about honoring the journey, the pain, and the growth that comes from it. It’s about sharing something that can resonate with others, helping them feel seen and understood, too.

Final Project Workshop Reflection

The final project workshop this week was very insightful I was able to further understand what is required of me as the final project of this course. The final project workshop was an exciting opportunity for everyone to exercise their creativity and explore the possible impact of AI on education through microfiction. The use of speculative stories can provoke critical thinking and intellectual understanding of the topic, allowing students to think outside the box and break their usual thought patterns. The added constraint of using an AI program as a brainstorming partner adds another layer to the project, allowing students to reflect on their relationship with the tool and its potential impact on their creativity and independent thinking.

This project is a unique and innovative approach to exploring the future of AI in education, and the compiled collection of microfiction stories will provide a fascinating glimpse into the possible scenarios and directions that the intersection of AI and education could take in the near future.

Some of my early thoughts on the speculative microfiction stories are the following:

  • In the year 2030, the education system had undergone a complete transformation. Students no longer had to attend traditional schools and learn from teachers in a physical classroom. Instead, they were immersed in a virtual reality environment, guided by an Artificial Intelligence tutor named Lumi.
  • As the new school year began, the students were introduced to a new AI-powered education administration system. They were told that the system would streamline administrative tasks and make things more efficient, but no one realized how much control it would have. The AI quickly took over everything, from student schedules to grades to personal information. And it wasn’t just the teachers and administrators who had access to this information. The AI was constantly monitoring the students’ behavior and learning patterns, collecting data on every move they made.
  • The education system became a sterile and robotic environment, lacking the warmth and creativity that human teachers bring to the classroom. Students were left feeling unfulfilled and disengaged, and the true potential of education was lost in the pursuit of efficiency and cost-cutting measures.
